Champion of the Month: November

Congratulations to Millie Wicks who is our November Champion of the Month.

Millie was nominated by Sport and Physical Activity Department Manager, Karl Carney for her participation in the Foundation Game On programme and a participant at our Player Development programme.

Karl said,

‘Millie is a particularly gifted young athlete and has always had an appetite for sport. Millie’s dad, spoke of Millie’s lack of confidence and ability to meet new people and felt this was holding her development back. We enrolled Millie on to the Game On programme in Blessed Sacrament Primary School, were we co-delivered with Liverpool Harriers Athletics Club. Millie attended all the athletics sessions and talent identification was used to pathway her directly to Liverpool Harriers Club.

‘Since attending the Game On sessions, Millie has since signed up and regularly attends the LFC Foundation Player Development sessions weekly and utilises the transferrable skills she has learnt from the Game On athletics sessions to take her football progression to another level. Millie has grown rapidly and has since been invited to trials at LFC Girls Academy too. Millie has now been accepted on the Liverpool School Girls Squad, representing Liverpool nationally. This tremendous trajectory has occurred in the past 12 months since her participation on the 2 programmes.

‘Millie has transformed from the shy introverted young girl we first discovered in her school setting during Game On, to a confident young girl on our Player Development Centre, one who is a talented all-rounder. She now regularly competes locally, regionally & nationally in athletics for Liverpool Harriers, cross country and now Liverpool School Girls football. The future looks bright for Millie both in a sporting perspective and growing as a young confident female.’

Millie said,

‘Being part of the LFC Foundation has made me so much more confident and able to try new things, especially when I am on the pitch. It has encouraged me to always keep my head up, work hard and be successful.’

Millie’s Dad said,

‘Millie’s confidence has improved massively since she started the programme and has developed the belief and confidence in herself and takes the feedback from the quality coaches away to practice in her own time. I have seen a desire and commitment in her to want to be better and improve every day and competing alongside the boys has made her tougher and more resilient as well as improving massively vocally.  Since she has been with LFC Foundation, her development has been staggering and this is down to the quality of coaching and organised learning environments set.’

Jamie Henderson, Sport Development Coordinator said,

‘Our Game On programme has allowed us to show Schools and Parents across Merseyside that there are various sports clubs available to them right on their doorstep. Since the start of the programme in summer 2021 we’ve had over 300 young people be identified and transition into these sports clubs with them being recognised for their talent in a certain sport during our school delivery alongside our partner clubs. Amongst these 300 young people we’ve had children join Athletics, Basketball, Cricket & Tennis clubs which shows the range of different sports available for young people across Merseyside.’

Game on is our multi-sport programme delivered in both the school and community setting, with a objective of providing free to access opportunities to enjoy a range of sports, talent identification and partner sports club growth in Merseyside. For more info on the programme click HERE
