Big Red Summer: Wrap-Up

We had a busy Big Red Summer, supported by Club partner SC Johnson

Big Red Summer 2022 set out to deliver holiday camps, football tournaments, free activities in parks, open spaces and community centres to 7,500 people across Liverpool City Region, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland.

Alongside our activities we have been empowering young people and families to champion sustainability in their community and to reuse and refill their LFC Foundation and SCJ branded water bottles.

Over the 6 weeks we handed out 7,500 reusable water bottles to participants over the course of more than 220 sessions so that young people and families could help us to reduce plastic waste whilst staying hydrated during our activities.

If each water bottle was refilled once per day, we could save up to 315,000 750ml disposable bottles from landfill, making a huge impact!

Here's what our participants thought about this year's Big Red Summer:

  • Our sessions we scored on average a 9.5 out of 10
  • 97% of participants surveyed said that the sessions improved their mental health or wellbeing
  • 99% of participants surveyed said that the session improved their physical health or fitness
  • When asked if participants would recommend the LFC Foundation to a friend the average score was 9.6 out of 10

Matt Parish, Chief Executive Officer, LFC Foundation "This year, our Big Red Summer programme engaged with 7,500 people during the six-week school holiday period, which was our biggest yet. We held over 200 accessible activities for families to enjoy the great outdoors together throughout the summer in their local communities."

“We were delighted to work alongside SC Johnson this year, with their support helping us to reach even more families to get them active to help improve both their physical and mental wellbeing, whilst also promoting the importance of sustainability for our future health. Each participant was provided with a reusable water bottle when they attended our sessions."

"By the end of the summer, if each water bottle was refilled once per day over a six week period, we will have helped save 315,000 750ml bottles from plastic waste"

Alan VanderMolen, Chief Communications Officer at SC Johnson, said: “SC Johnson is thrilled to work with Liverpool FC and the Liverpool FC Foundation on Big Red Summer, promoting good recycling habits, health, and well-being, across the community.

“We are committed to creating a more sustainable world for future generations as developing good habits today can result in significant change both for the Liverpool community and the planet as a whole.”

We’d like to thank SC Johnson for supporting the LFC Foundation this Big Red Summer, and to our participants for making it our most successful one yet!
